Greystone's Year-Round Tennis Program

Director of Tennis and Head Pro: Dean Peterson

Teaching and coaching since 1971, Dean Peterson brings a wealth of expertise to the position of Tennis Director at Greystone. His extensive experience runs from teaching and coaching at every age level, to organizing and running camps, and coaching private, group, league and school teams. He has worked with top teaching pros and touring professionals in team, camp, clinic, and tournament settings.

After earning a bachelors and masters of science in Physical Education with a concentration in sports psychology from SUNY Cortland, he began his athletic coaching career as a Peace Corp volunteer at the community college of Micronesia. Returning to the US, he became a head high school football and basketball coach in upstate New York and quickly went on to become the head football and tennis coach at Dean Junior College in Massachusetts, taking his tennis team all three years to the Junior College Nationals. He then accepted the head football and tennis coaching positions at Frostburg State University in Maryland, transforming two losing programs into winning programs. Coach Peterson stepped "up" to division IAA as the running backs coach at Towson State University for three years before shifting his career focus and accepting a teaching position at North Carolina State University in 1990, teaching tennis 1 and 2, tennis coaching and football coaching courses. J. W. Isenhour immediately brought him in to the Raleigh Racquet Club to work as a pro in the Junior Program. In over 18 years at RRC, Dean worked with some of the best juniors in the country and learned from the best teaching pro around, J.W. Isenhour.

Currently a physical education specialist at Millbrook Elementary School, Dean is looking forward to directing the tennis program over the coming years here at Greystone. Many of you may already be acquainted with Coach "Pete" as he has taught private lessons here at the club for many years. Dean and his wife Gail reside in Wake Forest. Dean can be contacted at greystonetennis@gmail.com.

Assistant Pro: Doug Brown.

Dean has hired Doug Brown for daytime clinics and to assist with teams. Doug grew up Tampa, Florida playing
competitive Jr. tennis. Graduating from Appalachian in 2004 with a degree in Psychology, he returned to Florida
to play tournaments and teach at Saddlebrook Tennis Academy. He returned to NC for theological school in 2005,
working at 7 Oaks tennis complex while completing his graduate degree. Doug works with College Ministry at
UNC (Campus Crusade for Christ). He is getting married in November and is thrilled to be teaching tennis in the
area again.
